Abstract
The authors analyzed the results of fine needle aspiration cytology, with the respect of organ, size and the proper tissue obtainability for cytologic diagnosis.
From July 1987 to October, 1988 ultrasonography and ultrasoundguided percutaneous fine needle aspiration biopsy (P.C.N.A.) were performed in 142 patients with intraabdominal mass at the department of diagnostic radiology, Korea Cancer Center Hospital.
The results were as follows:
1. Male to female ratio was 84:58 and mean age was 53 years.
2. Proper tissue for cytologic diagnosis was obtained in 131 (92.2%) of 142 biopsies. Number of the properly asspirated organs were are as follows: 105 (95.4%) of 110 biopsies in liver, 11 (78.5%) of 14 in pancreas, all cases (100%) of six masses of unknown primary site, three (75%) of four in pelvic mass. one (50%) of two in kidney, all cases (100%) in two abdominal masses. one (50%) of two in retroperitoneum. all cases in one adrenal mass and one stomach mass.
3. The most common cytologic diagnosis was adenocarcinoma(46 cases), followed by hepatocellular carcinoma (38 cases), squamous cell carcinoma (8 cases), absess (8 cases), rhabdomyosarcoma (4 cases), hypernephroma (2 cases), papillary cell carcinoma (2 cases), and adrenal cortical hyperplasia, cholangiocarcinoma, chondrosarcoma, adenosquamous cell carcinoma, serous cystadenoma.
4. The size and the number of the tumors were as follows;
Smaller than 1 cm in diameter (two cases); 1-2 cm (two cases); 2-4 cm (13 cases); 4-5 cm (15 cases); 5-10 cm (26 cases); more than 10 cm (14 cases).
5. No significant complication was seen during or after the procedure, except mild subjective discomfort at puncture site. Sonoguided percutaneous fine needle aspiration biopsy is safe and accurate method for cytologic tissue diagnosis.
